Get back to basics with Affective Leadership™.

To their employees, good leaders are superheroes. They protect the public from catastrophes, keep the world safe and free from chaos, and instill a sense of right and wrong and a set of values from which to model our behaviours.

Funny thing about superheroes though. If you are a comic book geek, the other thing most know about them is that the best heroes are also flawed and vulnerable. But that is what makes them such great characters - they are relateable to the rest of the world, and they use their vulnerability to drive them forward and serve the human race.

Traditional Pyramid.png

In the end, whether it's being a good leader or a good superhero, it is ultimately about two things - having the right perspective on what leadership truly is,  and treating others the way that you would you yourself would want to be treated.

Today's organizational design is almost always built on a power-reliant leadership model that relies primarily on command and control, with the focus being purely on the leader to "steer the ship". With this model of leadership usually represented in a pyramid, where traditional leadership generally involves the accumulation and exercise of power by the one at the top.

We see a different model of leadership.

One that takes the leadership pyramid and literally flips it on its head. A leadership and organizational design philosophy that puts our employees ahead of customers, because in order to best meet your customer's needs you need to meet the needs of those who serve your customers. We see the need to re-wire the way that we view leadership altogether- not as an all powerful being at the top of the pyramid, but rather one who supports and shares power with those who are in their charge. They inspire and equip their employees with the proper tools and training to be their best selves in their roles, ultimately serving the needs of clients and customers of their organization.

We call this model Affective Leadership™.

The Affective Leadership™ Model.

The Affective Leadership™ philosophy is one that is broken into 4 distinct areas of focus

SELF.png

Self.

Although a different approach from some servant based models, we see self evaluation and self- actualization as the critical first step in the development of a strong organizational leadership strategy. After all - if you don't understand yourself, how can you truly develop the tools to help others understand who they are and what they can bring to your organization.

Team.

We believe in the power and value of servant leadership and the need for developing those who wish to serve into strong leaders of organizations. Servant leadership is less about the discipline of others, but rather a disciplined approach to building capacity within your team and allowing those around you to be their best.

Organization.

We feel strongly that the organization itself has the ability to develop into a servant leader. This can be achieverd with overall organizational philosophy, process and practices that can lead others through a culture of empathy, kindness and belonging.

Service

Finally, our philosophy extends beyond the organization itself and into the community, to embrace our ability to be socially responsible through a variety of social innovation practices and community consultation.

Servant leadership

Servant Leadership theory aims to shift the way that our leaders look at their responsibility for those in which they are accountable for. With identified characteristics of the model such listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, and stewardship, the Servant Leader focuses their efforts on building  a strong commitment to the growth of others, while also building community.

Affective Consulting partners are members of the Robert K. Greenleaf Academy, with the ability to help your organization integrate Servant Leadership within your leadership team.

DIScovering your organizational Purpose

There are a number of organizations that can tell you what they do, or even how they do it- but very few organizations can explain WHY they do what they do.

Although it sounds like a simple exercise, the development and understanding of organizational purpose can play a significant role in the overall engagement of your employees, establishing greater strategic clarity and the reinforcement of behavioural norms that act as the undercurrent of your organizational culture.

COrporate Culture Strategy And MAteriality Evaluation

The thing about corporate culture is this: If you don't develop your corporate culture, it will develop itself. Either way, it's a part of your organization's DNA, and can be your greatest competitive advantage, so why not develop and leverage it.

Affective Consulting partners can help you better understand what your current culture is, and help you develop a plan to create the kind of culture that you, your customers and your employees will be proud to be a part of.
